Middle of the Night Insurer Roof Inspection Results in Police Investigation and Insurance Company Attorney Car Towed Away

Jul 15, 2015 By Chip Merlin Insurance

The fun and games that insurers put us and their policyholders through to not pay claims never ceases and gets more creative all the time. Attorney Ashley Harris told me that one of our condominium clients from Superstorm Sandy had a request from its insurer that the wind damaged roofs needed an inspection at 3:30 a.m. We agreed with the request but what happened was unusual—even more unusual than a 3:30 a.m. inspection.

I got a text from Ashley Harris at 3:30 a.m.: "I guess our walking on the roofs led somebody to think Cat Burglars were attempting a massive theft." Here is a picture of the scene:

Ultimately Ashley explained the situation to the police. While I was wondering whether Ashley would have had the proper credentials to get bailed out from the Highlands New Jersey jail or released on her own recognizance if things had not been cleared up, she wrote me another text that explained that the insurance company attorney was having a worse day than her. His car was being towed:

I will write more about this case at a later date.
