Biography
For Merlin Law Group attorney William L. “Trey” Flournoy, what he does for a living is integral to who he is as an individual. “I take pride in being able to help those who need it most when they have been most wronged,” says Trey. “It is part of the fabric of who I am as a person.
A Florida native, Trey grew up in the Tallahassee area but left the state to attend Culver-Stockton College in Missouri, where he played NAIA division football, competed on the school’s mock trial team, and received a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. After college, Trey moved back to the Sunshine State, taking a position as legal intern in a local firm where he able to observe mediations and trials and assist with case notes, gaining first-hand knowledge through ongoing dialogue about a range of legal issues with the firm’s supervising attorney.
With his continued interest in the law and a focus on furthering his education, Trey moved to Jacksonville to attend Florida Coastal School of Law, obtaining his Juris Doctor, and graduating in the top 20 percent of his class. During his time in law school, Trey secured several more legal internships, continuing to build on his experience, knowledge base, and exposure to varying areas of practice, including criminal defense.
Admitted to the Florida Bar in 2015, Trey was invited to speak at the 5th District Court of Appeals during the official Florida Bar Swearing-In Ceremony based on his top bar score.
Practicing now nearly a decade in first-party insurance law, in both residential and commercial cases, Trey says his dedication to the practice and upholding ethical standards is what he believes sets him apart. Published by Florida Law Weekly for identifying and defeating an insurer’s misuse of the flood and groundwater exclusion to deny a claim, Trey’s commitment to representing policyholders is evident — and is recognized by others as well.
Trey is a proud family man that believes there is nothing more important than family and friends. He is married to his wife, Cristina, and they have two sons together. Trey grew up riding and showing horses and has a love for nearly all things outdoors.
A newer member of the Merlin team, Trey’s legal knowledge and experience directly and positively impacts the firm’s clients and success in resolving their insurance claims. His practice jurisdictions include Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Texas at both state and federal levels. Most recently, Trey relocated to Texas as lead attorney with the firm’s new Dallas office.
