A local law firm is set to fight Factory Mutual Insurance Co. over claims from Hurricane Katrina.

The Port of New Orleans has chosen Tampa-based Merlin Law Group to represent it in a bad faith lawsuit against the insurance carrier.

The complaint alleges that Factory has failed to pay more than $100 million in damages resulting from the 2005 hurricane. According to estimates, the port suffered losses in excess of $140 million in property and business interruption and Factory has paid only $38 million to date, Merlin said in a release. More than two years has passed since the port filed its initial claim with the insurer.

Merlin has been focused on representing policyholders with insurance claims and controversies since 1985.
